Cold Pressed (Greenhouse) Juice

For me, living in the Greater Toronto Area, it is hard sometimes to find locally owned companies making trustworthy health products. Especially, good tasting health beverages, that you can trust to give you the right nutrients that you need throughout the day to maximize your productivity levels. Or, if you’re anything like me and battle with gut health, plant-based diets and probiotics, are your best friends! That’s why I am a regular consumer of the Greenhouse Juice products. This company has taken over the Toronto scene for its widely known cold-pressed juices with rich flavors and colors, that once consumed, really set you up for success throughout a busy day. When I had the chance to chat with Hana James, co-founder of Greenhouse Juice, for the #LetsTalk podcast, I was really excited to get to know this superstar’s story and understand what made her go into the wellness space as an entrepreneur.

Who is Hana
I’m the co-founder and director of community for Greenhouse Juice. I handle partnerships, retail, products development, and community related stuff to make sure that we are working with the right people to spread the Greenhouse Juice brand.

What is your formal training?
I studied Cell Biology, and after establishing our current Greenhouse Juice company, I also took a Holistic Nutrition course. I’ve always been interested in health and wellness. My father is actually a meditation teacher, and my mom was always in the health foods business since I was four years old. I’ve always been in this (health) world without any formal training, it is more like something personal and close to my heart.

Why pursue health goods?
I was about to apply to a masters program, but I didn’t, shortly after realizing that I hated medical research, there was no connection for me so I had to think about what I wanted to do. I always loved seeing how healthy foods healed people. I love interacting with people, and seeing how lifestyle choices could change people’s lives. I started a coffeeshop inside a gym, and I had healthy foods, snack, and juices. I ran this cafe for three years, and expanded to two different locations. But it wasn’t enough, especially being inside a gym and having a hard time making it accessible to the wider public. That’s when I decided to collaborate with my now partners, who were out in Los Angels (LA), and seeing how cold pressed juices made their lives better. They knew what I was doing, and thought: why don’t we have this in Toronto? That’s how my journey started with Greenhouse Juice.

What is cold pressed juice?
It is the use of hydraulic pressure to extract the juice. It is a much more gentle process. It minimizes heat and oxidation, which are typically introduced into the at-home juicing process. With cold-pressed juicing, you are left with a raw and alive nutrients juice. This way, it can extract three to five times more nutrients than your at-home juicer or other blending mechanisms. To have a raw alive product, that is needed for your diet, and your body doesn’t have to do anything but can absorb it, is a magical thing. That is why, the flavours and colours are so rich.

How do you create your products, and prove that it’s healthy?
From the beginning, we wanted to make sure that we were designing juices that tasted great, and had amazing health benefits. That includes making sure that we looked at sugar content, getting high vitamins and minerals. We have also worked with naturopathic doctors to make sure that the ingredient blends worked well together. We have PhD scientists on our staff, who are making sure that is a well balanced beverage.

Why the minimalist branding
We wanted our brand to be approachable. There is an amazing team handling that, I definitely cannot take all of the credit. With our brand, we wanted healthy living and plant-based beverage to be fun, not boring or a chore that you have to do. It shouldn’t feel like you are compromising on something else to be healthy.
The greatest piece of business advice
Business isn’t easy. To succeed as an entrepreneur, you have to be persistent. That kind of problem solving and not limiting yourself type of attitude. You have to look and think outside of the box. Just because someone did it one way, it doesn’t mean that you cannot do it another way. Having faith in yourself, and keep on going even if it doesn’t workout the first, there are plenty of possibilities after your first trials.

Highlight of your entrepreneurship journey with Greenhouse Juice
The connections that I have made with our customers, and different people that I have met along the way. That is what keeps me going. I worked in our physical store for the first two to three years, and I loved it. It is amazing to talk to people, that interaction is what pushed me to be an entrepreneur. Seeing the way that Greenhouse juices has changed people’s lives in small and big ways, has truly been the biggest highlight for me.

What is your wellness practice
The way I look at wellness, it’s all about balance. It is not applied in one particular way. I’m not even completely plant-based. I’m more about fluidity, and listening to myself, and seeing what works best for me. I have been meditating since I was four years old because my dad is a Tai Chi meditation teacher. That’s been a huge part of my life, that helped me focus on the task in hand, and be present in my day. The biggest part is really listening to yourself, and hearing what your body needs. Health and wellness isn’t always about working out everyday. I do work out, but on the days that I don’t feel like it, I don’t do it because I know that it will do more harm than good.

The most important part of my day, to set the tone, is going out for a walk with my dog early in the morning. I don’t need it, but I want too. I love that.

What legacy do you want to leave on this earth?
I want to be remembered as someone who was passionate, hard working, and authentic.

Three words to describe yourself?
Compassionate. Authentic. Hardworking.
